We’re looking forward to 2021 when hopefully sailing and life in general will be back to something nearer to what we were all used to.
Covid effectively put a stop to all the Club’s junior and youth sailing activities in 2020.
With the club’s RYA Youth Training Scheme courses and activities strongly focused on the first half of the summer, when full ‘lock-down’ was the order of the day, the club’s committee took the decision to suspend these along with our adult training programme.
The Milton Keynes and Bucks Youth Sailing Association (MKBYSA) took the decision to suspend its regular joint club training programme, with the National Schools Sailing Association (NSSA) regatta, a regular summer fixture for many of the club’s young sailors, also cancelled.
The temporary closure of the club during the spring and early summer also put a halt to the club’s regular Saturday social sailing sessions; free sailing with safety boat cover and informal instructor led coaching for those looking to develop their sailing skills.
For 2021 the club is again planning to offer the full range of RYA Youth Sailing Scheme courses with RYA Stage 1 and 2 courses getting those juniors new to sailing or with limited experience up and running (well sailing!) and Stages 3 and 4 and the Advanced Modules developing skills, experience and confidence.
We are also planning the introduction of regular junior/youth sailing sessions, getting the club’s younger sailors together giving them the opportunity to build their skills and confidence through structured, relaxed and hopefully fun sailing sessions.
For sailors without their own boats the club has a number of Toppers, Picos and Lasers that members can hire, subject to availability.
The monthly MKBYSA club training sessions should also be back up and running, giving the club’s sailors the opportunity to visit other local clubs for some focused race training sessions and qualification races for the annual NSSA regatta. Further information about these sessions can be found under the Youth Sailing tab above.
For the older and more experienced youth sailors we run an Assistant Instructor (AI) programme, giving sailors the opportunity to train as assistant instructors and assist and support the club’s training sessions. AI training also starts to put in place many of the skills (both sailing and teaching) necessary to go on to become fully qualified RYA Dinghy Instructors.
The club requires that the parents or guardians of a junior member, ensure that a member of the club, either themselves or a nominated representative, is present at all times while juniors are using the club and facilities.
The club’s junior membership options are currently under review (with the Covid situation throwing up several anomalies which needed to be addressed). If you have a junior sailor looking to join the club in the immediate/near future please email firstname.lastname@example.org who will update you with the current options. For the 2021 membership year junior membership rates will be published on the website in the near future.
